Biography
I started playing the sax in 2004, after my wife bought me an alto for Christmas. After opening my present I managed to get two or three tunes out of it, none of them were in time or even the correct key for that matter, but they were tunes none the less and I was hooked!
The following months saw me playing as much as I could, and trawling through the Internet to find as much information as possible about playing my new found love. This is where I found Pete Thomas' fantastic website and forum, Cafe Saxophone, a fantastic resource of useful information and a very friendly chat forum, full of players of all levels and abilities who are only too happy to offer support and advice to fellow players.
Shortly after beginning my journey into the world of the saxophone, I longed to play with other musicians and soon found myself playing at a local jam session. My career soon took its first upward turn, when I was invited to join my first band called "Inside Out."
This gave me an insight into playing in public and it was somewhere that I thrived.
Not long after joining "Inside Out," I bought my first tenor sax. The lower tones and the bigger fuller sound had me totally hooked and I continue to play the tenor to this day.
I have also started busking. It's an amazing experience, and also one of the most nerve wracking! I regularly play on the streets of Stratford-upon-Avon, Daventry, Northampton and Rugby. In fact, whilst I was playing on the streets of Rugby, my brother filmed me and entered the film into a global competition for R&R World. I could have been knocked down with a feather when I became Busker of the month in June of 2010!
You can see the winning video by going to the "Video" page and watching "Busking in Rugby"
I have recently taken the plunge into the world of the baritone saxophone! Having bought a beautiful P. Mauriat baritone I now appear to be devoting most of my time to its mastery, with some very good results! Could this become my main sax? Only time will tell.
I have now played with several top quality bands which include "Johnny and the Zephyrs" a fast paced Rock 'n' Roll band catering for high society weddings and corporate gigs, and most recently, I appeared with "Dark Side Of The Wall."
"DSOTW" as they are better known, are a Pink Floyd tribute act and I was required to follow the lead of Dick Parry, the original sax player with Pink Floyd. This involved a rapid switch between the baritone and the tenor sax mid solo! This went well and was well received by the fans, who are very faithful to Floyd.
They enjoyed my performance so much that they have asked me to join them as their permanent sax man!
